Research Interests

Our group interest is focused on Advanced/Additive Manufacturing Innovation in Multi-scale Composite Design, Manufacturing, and Applications, specific areas include:

  • Advanced materials technology

  • Additive manufacturing innovations 

  • Structural and functional fibers and composites

  • Materials and structures for aerospace applications

  • Energy applications towards safety, high energy and power, low cost




Our team received UD NSF I-Corps Site Program Award and $3,000. Good job, Wes!



Our 3D printer and printing technology received CAMX ACE (Awards for Composites Excellence) Award by The American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA). This award will be announced in The Composites and Advanced Materials Expo (CAMX) 2020.


Our lab has a new 6 axis robot arm with high payload. This robot arm will greatly enhance our research capability towards advanced and intelligent manufacturing.


PhD student, Soyeon Park, will give a presentation about "Understanding dynamic wicking and curing of epoxy resin in carbon fiber tows for 3D printing application" for the SOLVAY Student Competition in the American Society for Composites 35th Annual Technical Conference in September, 2020. Good luck!


Dr. Fu will give three presentations on the topics of batteries and 3D printing in the 2020 Materials Research Society (MRS) conference in December, 2020.


Dr. Fu will give a presentation about "3D Printing of Continuous Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermosetting Composites" in the 2020 ASME The International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) in November, 2020.


Dr. Fu will give a presentation about "3D Printing of Continuous Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermosetting Composites" in the 5th annual ASTM International Conference on Additive Manufacturing (ASTM ICAM 2020) in November, 2020.



Dr. Fu received 2020 ASC/DEStech Young Composites Researcher Award, from American Society for Composites (ASC). 

A DEStech Young Composites Researcher Award winner is a member of the composites community who must be no older than 35 and early in their career has made a significant impact on the science and technology of composite materials through a sustained research effort.

Our team is working on functional masks, and the masks are designed to potentially kill COVID-19 in a few minutes.


We used 3D printer to fabricate face shield for the local hospitals.

LiF-Li Composite Anode

We developed a scalable method to produce LiF rich Li metal anode for high current and high capacity lithium-metal batteries. This work has been published in Energy & Environmental Materials.
