Welcome to Prof. Kelvin Fu's group website!
Prof. Fu is Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at University of Delaware, affiliated faculty at UD Center for Composite Materials (UD-CCM), editorial board member of Composites Part B, and elected member of ASME Aerospace Division Structures and Materials Technical Committee.
We are doing world-leading composite research, helping students to succeed, publishing high-impact research articles, and moving innovations from lab to market.
Prof. Fu's lab is now leading >$8M projects supported by DOE FE, ARPA-E Open, and DOE AMO since 2022.

Research Interests

Our group interest is focused on Materials and Manufacturing Innovations in Multi-scale Fibers and Composite Design, Manufacturing, Testing and Analysis, and Applications.

Kaiyue's work "Core-Shell Structured Tow-Pregs Enabled Additive Manufacturing of Continuously Reinforced Thermoset Composites" was accepted by the Journal of Composites Part B. In this work, we have developed an innovative tow-preg featuring a rapidly curable resin as the outer shell and a robust resin as the core, facilitating the 3D printing of composite materials.

We have developed a Composite Additive Manufacturing platform that can print any types of commercially available dry carbon fibers (in a form of tow or fabric) and any types of thermally curable thermoset resins (not photo- or frontal-polymerizable resins). Our provisional patent about 3D printing of continuous carbon fiber/thermoset composite was filed! Cheers! We are using commercially available high-performance carbon fibers and resins to produce 3D printed composites! We believe this is a big step in advancing composites manufacturing!
